My first year as a committee member

Charlotte Galloway 3 Dec 2024

This blog provides an insight into my first year as a committee member, of the Fertility Nursing Forum. I hope this blog empowers and encourages you to think about becoming a committee member in the future.

As we sat around our computer screens on a cold January morning we were met by such wonderful smiling and welcoming faces. Our fellow committee members had such a wealth of experience, and I felt a sense of pride to be sat with so many inspiration individuals. The first meeting we had is known as a strategy day. During this meeting we as a forum set out the plans for the year. Discussion starts around the yearly conference and quarterly seminars, leading on to in-depth discussion surrounding upcoming projects. All committee members have a vast amount of fertility and clinical experience, thus benefiting the forum greatly, as we can identify areas where further guidance, support and information is required.

The forum is fair and ensures every committee member has equal opportunity to discuss ideas, participate in webinars and upcoming projects. The first step to any project is a discussion with all committee members to ensure everyone agrees the project is required. An in-depth bid is then submitted, in the hope to secure the project. I was given the opportunity to produce a bid for a much-needed project. Understanding the importance of the bid creates its own challenges, as the bid requires us to rationalise the need for the project in detail. On reflection I hold a sense of pride at completing this task and securing a project.

The year has ended with a wonderful conference held at the Royal college of nursing headquarters. To see so many delegates attend a conference put together by so many inspiration individuals that I get to work alongside is a very proud moment. The conference provides opportunities to network with fellow fertility nurses and midwives, gaining insight into other’s practice. In my opinion this is always a positive aspect, as individuals leave the conference feeling inspired, with new ideas and career aspirations. I speak first hand, as last year I was a delegate at the conference and left feeling very empowered.

Its wonderful to reflect on my first year as a committee member, and to look at all we have achieved as a forum. I am very excited to see what 2025 holds for us.
