Position statement on Taliban banning women from nursing education

RCN condemns Taliban ban on women accessing nursing and midwifery education

The RCN strongly condemns widely circulating reports of the Taliban banning women from nursing and midwifery training in Afghanistan. i We stand alongside the international community to implore Taliban authorities to place the health needs of their population at the forefront of their decision -making and reverse this catastrophic decision.

Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, ii with one woman dying from preventable causes every two hours during pregnancy, childbirth or its aftermath. iii

Access to health is already a precarious situation and this move further restricts care for women and girls across the country. The Taliban has already compromised women’s access to health by banning women from being treated by male medical professionals unless a male family member is present. iv

Since the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, several measures restricting the rights of women and girls have been imposed. In September 2021, the Taliban banned girls from attaining a secondary school education, these restrictions were expanded in December 2022 to ban women and girls from attending higher education. This latest reported ban effectively marks the closing of all higher educational routes for women and girls in the country.

The negative impact on the whole population, transcending gender, class and age will echo for generations without a reversal of these reported policies. We urge leaders to focus on developing a nursing profession of all talents for the people of Afghanistan.
