POLICY: Nurse Innovators - Main Report - Clinical Decision Making In Action

02 July 2015
An RCN Scotland report illustrating the vital contribution of nurses in senior clinical decision-making roles in improving outcomes for patients and the health service as a whole.

Read the case studies which informed our report:
As a nation, we know that we need new models of patient care to meet changing demand. At a time when the health service is facing unprecedented pressure, advanced nursing practice offers a sustainable solution to the delivery of quality patient care.

Advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) are highly qualified nurses, who have the clinical expertise, theoretical knowledge and experience needed to work at an advanced level of nursing practice. Central to this is their ability to act as a senior clinical decision-maker, with the authority and autonomy to make complex decisions about a patient’s care.   This report sets out the key actions which RCN Scotland believes would support ANPs to take a far greater role in our health service.
