Katie Bagstaff

Katie Bagstaff

Forum Chair

After qualifying as a registered Children's Nurse in 2000, Katie went on to work on a surgical ward specialising in plastic surgery, orthopaedic and neurosurgery. In 2002, she then moved to Paediatric Recovery and has an extensive clinical knowledge of Children's surgery. She now works as the Senior Sister Paediatric Recovery and Children's Day Surgery ward. Within her role, Katie also co-manages the Adult Recovery areas.

She is passionate about promoting the needs of the children and young people within the Perioperative setting, and has developed regional competences and conferences to encourage and support this.

Aside from her clinical enthusiasms, Katie is committed to providing and promotive team ownership and engagement.

Carli Whittaker: Professional Lead

Carli has been appointed as the Head of Nursing Practice - Children and Young People (CYP) in the Nursing Practice Academy of the RCN Institute of Excellence. 

Being Australian and having completed her Nursing Degree at Sydney University, Carli has utilised nursing to travel and gain extensive international clinical experience in a variety of fields before finding her passion in ChildrenÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s Nursing and Paediatric Critical Care (PCC). 

Carli completed her MSc Advanced Nursing in 2012 in comparing educational approaches in achieving clinical competence. Carli is currently undertaking her PhD in the exploration of childrenÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s nurses and the retention challenges faced. Carli was the PCC Educator for 11 years at Nottingham ChildrenÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s Hospital prior to her role as Director of Clinical Skills (Associate Professor) in the School of Health Sciences (SHS) at University of Nottingham. Carli has also had roles as the Consultant Editor for RCNi Nursing Children and Young People and as the TOC21 Chief Examiner for ChildrenÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s Nursing.

CarliÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s clinical interest and expertise predominantly focuses on Paediatric Critical Care but is extremely passionate about all professional nursing issues whilst advocating for children and young people and childrenÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥™s nurses. 

Carli is passionate about research, teaching and learning and has extensive knowledge and skills in delivering professional education. She works in collaboratively in partnership with the NHS, private and independent sector, and professional, statutory and regulatory bodies. 

Carli's priorities for the coming months are:

  • supporting and empowering the CYP workforce
  • exploring the challenges of mental and physical health of CYP and their families to who care is provided
  • ensuring all our work is considered from an equality, diversity, and inclusion perspective.

To enable progress in these priority areas she will:

  • Listen to, learn from, encourage, and work with RCN members to provide support and guidance to enable the delivery of crucial and contemporary CYP work. 
  • Work collaboratively with all teams to ensure the challenges facing CYP, their families, and the workforce supporting them, are acknowledged and prioritised.
  • Collaborate to ensure the CYP nursing voice is heard; whilst utilising expertise to influence and create change at strategic levels to shape service provision and priorities at a local, national, UK and international level.

Katrina is a paediatric staff nurse in an Emergency Department with special interests in palliative care, transition of adolescents to adult services and mental health.
Neil Fletcher

Roald Dahl Clinical Nurse Specialist for teenagers and young adults, Barts Health

Neil has had a variety of roles throughout his career, including Practice Development, Senior Nurse for children's inpatient and outpatients, Children's Site Practitioner, Senior Clinical Site Manager and Guest Lecturer. The majority of his experience has been within the field of Emergency Department Nursing.

Neil is passionate about young people health and was delighted that three members of the Barts Health Youth Forum were part of his interview panel and Neil helps to facilitate the monthly youth forum meeting.

Neil has recently undertaken the Florence Nightingale Foundation Leadership and is very pleased to be supported by Barts Health NHS Trust and the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity.

Daniel Gooding

Daniel Gooding

RCN Children and Young People's Forum steering committee member, former West Midlands Board member, former Devon Branch Chair

Daniel is a paediatric charge nurse, who studied at London South Bank University. He started his career in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in the West Midlands. He served on the RCN West Midlands Board for two years prior to moving to Devon. Since moving to Devon, he has become a Charge Nurse in the Paediatric Emergency Department and has spent time chairing the department wide shared governance patient safety council.

He has previously been recognised for leading innovative projects to support student nurses, receiving prestigious award from the ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ on two occasions celebrating the amount of effort and dedication he puts into these projects. He has published articles in Nursing Standard and has co-chaired conferences for the ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ and the NHS.

He founded ‘The Student Nurse Project’, an online supportive community and currently has a role with the community on Twitter. He is passionate about staff wellbeing and paediatric emergency medicine and trauma. 

Areas of special interests include: paediatric emergency medicine, paediatric trauma, patient experience, social media, pre-reg students, network building and staff wellbeing.

Stephanie Adele Manning

Stephanie Adele Manning

Stephanie is an experienced and dedicated Teaching associate in child nursing with a 14-year clinical background in Neonatal Intensive Care, leading, facilitating and contributing, across both BSc and MSc Child Nursing programmes.

She Co-lead for the Enhanced Clinical Practice ECP Apprenticeship Programme, Neonatal and Paediatric pathway and course lead for the NURS3112 BSc year 3 Neonatal Nursing module at UoN. Extensive knowledge of Neonatal Intensive Care and passionate about transformational leadership, developing and enhancing the skills and knowledge base of pre and post graduate children’s nurses.

Sophie McKay

Sophie is a registered children's nurse working as a lecturer in clinical skills and simulation at Middlesex University and as a paediatric sister on an NHS general paediatric ward. She is a published chapter author in a textbook for nursing associates. A trained CYP critical care nurse with experience in PICU, NICU and adult ICU as redeployment during the pandemic. She has also worked as academic faculty training bed buddies for the nightingale hospital in London during the pandemic. A resuscitation council NLS instructor and EPALS/ ALS provider. Post graduate studies include, professional leadership, neuroscience and neurocritical nursing, mentorship, master in nursing and a diploma in tropical nursing. She has nursed abroad in Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius and China. She is a proud professional nurse advocate and is passionate about clinical education, restorative supervision, coaching and student development.
