Attending fertility conferences as a fertility nurse

Anne Howard 3 Apr 2025

This blog aims to encourage fertility nurses to attend fertility conferences, but not just for the education. Yes, education is a huge part of it, however conferences give us opportunities to share best practice, network and collaborate and this blog will tell you how.

Fertility nursing is always evolving, and staying up to date with the latest advancements is key. Conferences are a great way to learn, but they’re also so much more than lectures and workshops. They offer a chance to connect, collaborate, and grow in ways you might not expect. Here’s why attending fertility conferences can be such a rewarding experience.

Learning beyond the classroom

Of course, education is a big part of any conference. Fertility conferences often feature expert-led talks, hands-on workshops, and showcases the latest tools and technologies. Whether it’s discovering new fertility preservation techniques or understanding the emotional side of patient care, every session adds to your expertise.

But the best learning often happens outside the formal sessions like during a coffee break when a conversation sparks a great idea or when someone shares a practical tip that changes the way you work.

Building your professional circle

Conferences bring together fertility nurses, doctors, embryologists, and counselors, making them a perfect place to meet people who truly understand the field. Here’s why networking at these events is so valuable:

  • Swapping best practices: Find out how other clinics manage patient care, new tech, or even those tricky consent forms.
  • Collaborating on projects: You might meet someone keen to co-present or collaborate on research.
  • Finding a mentor: Connecting with experienced professionals can give your career a boost.
  • Making friends: Some of my closest colleagues started as conference acquaintances.

Finding inspiration in shared stories

One of the most memorable parts of any conference is hearing real stories from colleagues. Whether it’s a new clinic strategy, a patient success story, or handling a tough situation, these experiences can reignite your passion for your work.

I always leave conferences feeling energised and full of fresh ideas. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do and the impact we have on our patients’ lives.

Keeping up with the latest trends

The exhibition hall is always buzzing with activity, giving you a chance to check out new medications, treatments, and technologies. Whether it’s the latest lab equipment, patient-support apps, or fertility charities, these innovations can make a real difference in your practice.

Being part of a community

Being surrounded by like-minded professionals is an amazing feeling. Conferences often include social events, award ceremonies, and casual meetups where you can relax and connect with others.

It’s easy to feel like heading back to your hotel room after a long day, especially if you’re attending alone, but pushing yourself to join in can lead to some incredible conversations and friendships that last long after the event is over.

Making the most of your conference experience

Having attended many conferences, I’ve learned a few things about making the most of them:

  • Plan ahead: Check the agenda and prioritise the sessions that matter most to you.
  • Get involved: Ask questions, join discussions, and introduce yourself to new people.
  • Don’t skip the socials: These gatherings help you meet other professionals in a more relaxed setting.
  • Use social media: Follow event hashtags and connect with attendees online. Many conferences also have their own apps for networking.
  • Follow up: Stay in touch with new connections you never know where a simple introduction might lead.

Final thoughts

Attending a fertility conference isn’t just about learning it’s about growing as a professional and as a person. You’ll leave with new knowledge, fresh ideas, and connections that can shape your career. So, if you ever get the chance to attend, go for it. You never know what amazing opportunities might come your way.
