New RCN UK Stewards Committee rep for Scotland wants to hear from you

Des Osunde 7 Mar 2024

I am the new member for Scotland of the RCN Stewards Committee. I am genuinely excited not only about representing stewards in Scotland but also about the opportunity to meet and collaborate with each of you.

Our role as stewards positions us uniquely to spearhead positive changes within our organisation, changes that will not only enrich the experiences of our members but also propel our organisation forward into a future of which we can all be proud.

We are at a pivotal moment, one that calls for our collective insight, dedication, and action. To guide our discussions and initiatives, critical questions have emerged from the recent steward committee meeting that are central to enhancing our members' experience and the overall health of our organisation.

In Scotland we have made some progress and just recently have had Scottish government approval for implementation of the Agenda for Change review recommendations on protected time for learning, a reduction in the working week and a review of band 5 nursing roles.

As a UK committee we are looking at the following issues in greater depth and as your steward representative for Scotland I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on them:

  1. Recruitment and retention of nurses: the challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses are multifaceted and have far-reaching implications for our profession. What are the root causes of these challenges, and what innovative solutions can we implement to overcome them?
  2. Pay progression:  some nurses spend a significant portion of their careers at the top of their pay band, with little or no progression. Why is this the case, and what strategies can we employ to ensure a fairer, more motivating progression system?
  3. Career progression: what are your thoughts on the choice members face between taking a managerial role and or staying in a clinical one, and how can we balance the need for strong leadership with the equally important need for clinical expertise?
  4. Addressing members' experiences: many members have expressed concerns about staying in one band longer than anticipated. This not only affects morale but also impacts the perception of our profession's progression opportunities. How can we address and amend this issue to foster a more positive and progressive career pathway for our members?

Email me your thoughts, comments, and contributions on these questions, your input is not just welcome - it is essential. Together, we have the power to enact meaningful change, to address the concerns and aspirations of our members, and to lay down a path that leads to a more fulfilling and rewarding professional environment for nursing staff throughout Scotland.

The RCN has been and continues to work on these issues for all members wherever they are working in the UK and I am looking forward to engaging with each of you, learning from your experiences, and collectively finding solutions that will make a lasting impact. Let us come together with open minds and a shared commitment to our cause.
