The evolving fracture neck of femur pathway

Jessica Otu 31 Oct 2024

My blog highlights the journey and the evolving pathway of fractured neck of femur patients. It is relevant to orthopaedic, surgical nurses but also nurses as a whole who have cared for patients with fractured neck of femurs through the emergency phase, therapies stage and sometimes intensive care.

Previously these group of patients were not thought of as a priority for the general list, and were often listed on the CEPOD list (incorporate all cases requiring acute surgical intervention within 24–48 hours of admission) and they were outlying in beds across the hospital - this soon changed due to the mortality.

Something that may have also influenced this was the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) which was established in 2007, it is a national clinical audit database which measures performance against national and professional standards. Carol believes patients experiences improved due to early mobilisation and nutritional promotion.
