Story Swap Art Project in Wales

2 Apr 2024

As part of our new exhibition, Shining a Light, we commissioned artist Alice Briggs to lead a workshop with support staff and care home residents.

Residents and their carers at Plas Cwmcynfelin care home in Ceredigion, Wales collaborated to create photographic sun prints (cyanotypes) which are on display in our exhibition, Shining a Light: A History of Nursing Support Work at RCN HQ.

The prints are inspired by objects from residents’ lives that they own and treasure, which may seem ordinary or insignificant to others. Alice encouraged the pairs to exchange memories about their objects, focusing on themes of family, identity, and a sense of belonging.

Alice Briggs is an artist, arts educator and curator. Alice worked with Age Cymru on their flagship cARTrefu project as an artist in care homes for five years and is a Creative Agent for the Lead Creative Schools Arts Council Wales project.

To expand the reach of this project, Alice has developed a ‘Story Swap’ activity guide, enabling carers to lead a workshop in their own care homes.

If you’d like a copy, you can email library@rcn.org.uk and we can post one to you or you can download the digital version. Alice will be running an online event to explain the guide through a craft workshop, find out more.
