Check your banding

Should you be on a higher band?

15 Feb 2024

We are working with employers on a trust-by-trust basis across the region to ensure every member of the nursing team is paid correctly for the work that they do and the level of responsibility they hold.

Look out for emails and communication about banding in the coming weeks and months.

There are important differences between band 2 and 3 roles in the NHS.

Band 2 roles should be non-clinical and focus on personal care and support. They include

undertaking personal care duties
supporting with toileting, bathing and dressing
supporting with meals
recording fluid balance and nutrition.

Band 3 roles also include delegated clinical care tasks, such as

taking blood pressure
monitoring blood glucose
observing wounds
dressing simple wounds
removing catheters
urine testing
pregnancy testing.

Unfortunately, we believe that many band 2 nursing staff members in this region have been left without the correct career progression and pay increases.

This is unacceptable and the RCN is fighting for change. Find out more about career progression.
