Yorkshire & the Humber Council and Board Members announced

We reveal our new Council Member, alongside four new Board Members, for the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

We are delighted to announce that Sian Grbin (pictured) is our new Council Member for the Yorkshire and the Humber region. Sian will take up her role on 1 January 2025.

Sian has been a member of the RCN since 2003 and has personally benefitted from the trade union’s advice and support over the years. She attended RCN Congress in Newport last year.

Sian brings with her extensive experience in the nursing profession. Having worked as a children’s nurse for the best part of two decades, Sian has worked in NHS specialist wards, general paediatrics, and A+E. She has also undertaken agency work in complex home care, special needs schools and public health, alongside completing shifts in NHS and private hospitals.

Of her ambitions as an RCN Council Member, Sian has said: “My interest in the role of RCN Council is in contributing to setting the RCN's strategy as informed by the members and using my knowledge and experience to support the RCN in lobbying the government.” 
Council Members work on behalf of every one of more than half a million members to guide the RCN, which is world’s largest nursing union and professional body. 

These Council Members collaborate to provide guidance and direction on our vision and strategic aims. RCN Council is made up of 17 elected members, including 12 nurse members. You can find out more about RCN Council here.

New Board Members

In addition, we are excited to welcome four new Board Members in the Yorkshire and the Humber region, who were elected unopposed and will take up their roles on 1 January 2025.

These are:

Grace Chukwurah, a staff nurse who has worked in emergency departments
Maria Davies, who currently works in the admissions avoidance and supported discharge service
Joan Pons Laplana, an area manager with NHS England’s Choices College
Emilia Merer, a clinical projects manager for the North East and Yorkshire region, NHS England.

The Yorkshire and the Humber Board works to advance the work of the RCN in this region in accordance with the aims and objectives of the RCN as set out in our Charter.

The Board meets at least three times a year and its meetings include an open session which all Yorkshire and Humber region members are welcome to attend as observers.

RCN Boards advise and support their directors on matters relating to the country or region. They also carry out work delegated to them by Council.
The RCN governed by the elected members who make up our Council, committees and boards. They represent our members and work alongside the Executive Team who are responsible for delivering our strategic and operational plans.
